Watering a monstera: How to check soil moisture

A monstera copes with a short dry spell better than permanently wet soil. A quick soil check is therefore more useful than following a rigid calendar.
When does a monstera need water?
Check the soil three to four centimetres below the surface. If it is still damp, adjust the watering date. If it is dry, water thoroughly until a small amount drains from the pot, then empty the saucer or cover pot. Temperature, pot size, substrate and season can all change the interval.
Choosing the right position
Bright, indirect light is ideal. A light curtain can protect a south-facing window from midday sun, while east- and west-facing windows often work without extra shade. In low light, growth slows and new leaves may develop fewer fenestrations.
Feeding and repotting
From April to September, a liquid foliage fertiliser roughly every two weeks is usually enough when used as directed. Feeding can normally pause during winter. Consider repotting when roots emerge from the pot, the substrate dries unusually quickly or the plant becomes unstable.
